Did you know that all Volkswagens require H rated or higher speed rated tires. Whether Diesel or Gasoline engine or as we call it slow and steady or fast and furious. H rated tires are classed as performance tires and we stress the importance or staying with the manufacturers recomendation with tires. Below you will find a brief explanation to help you, the consumer understand what exactly speed rating is and what it means to your safety and your vehicles characteristics and handling.
When replacing your vehicle’s original tires, it is important to respect their speed rating. With today’s suspensions, car manufacturers attach more and more importance to the speed rating of the tires that equip their vehicles. Thus, a car delivered with original tires rated H or V will offer lower performance with S-rated tires (see chart below). In fact, steering, braking, road holding and stability will all be negatively impacted because, for one thing, the sidewalls of an S-tire are not as stiff as those of an H- or a V-tire.
Tires with an H, V or Z speed rating are considered performance tires. To maintain this designation, winter tires with those speed ratings must sacrifice some of their capability in deep snow and slush. Buyers therefore have to decide whether winter capability is more important to them than performance. But no matter what they decide, it is important to choose winter tires with a speed rating that matches that of the original tires as closely as possible.
A tire’s speed rating is always indicated on the tire itself, after the information relative to its dimensions. Take, for example, a tire branded P205/65R15 92H. The letter P indicates a tire for a passenger car; the number 205 represents the width of the tire in millimetres; the number 65 indicates the ratio of the height of the sidewall to the width of the tire, expressed as a percentage; the letter R signifies radial tire construction; and the number 15 is the wheel diameter in inches. The number 92 is a code that indicates a tire’s load carrying capacity at maximum air pressure (630 kg), and the letter H is the speed rating (210 km/h).
