The striking VW you see here could hit North American showrooms in as little as a year, as the carmaker's new entry-level model.

Volkswagen today unveiled the new Polo at the Geneva auto show. Think of it as a one-size-down version of the new Golf — with equally attractive lines and proportions, and top-quality materials.

The Polo has been refined over 33 years and five generations. Refined indeed — this new model weighs 7.5-percent less than its predecessor, has been engineered to ace crash tests, and looks far more expensive, inside and out, than what it will actually sell for.

Eight engines are on tap for Europe, four gas and four TDI diesel, generating from 60 to 105 horsepower.

Particularly noteworthy is the environmentally friendly BlueMotion Polo, which features a 1.2-liter three-cylinder TDI diesel worth 75 horsepower, automatic start-stop, regenerative braking, a wind-cheating body kit and low-rolling-resistance tires — helping it achieve an astonishing 70 miles per gallon. Wow!

Transmission choices are a five- or six-speed manual, or innovative seven-speed dual-clutch manumatic.

High-end options include static turning lights integrated into the fog lights, side curtain airbags, a navigation system, panoramic sunroof and bi-xenon headlamps.

Sources tell VolksWatch that the Polo is all but a done deal for the USA and Canada. VW is closely monitoring exchange rates, consumer demand and general market conditions before it makes a firm commitment.
